Understanding Graphite Grades: From 2H to 8B

Ever wonder how artists achieve such deep blacks without charcoal? The secret lies in understanding the graphite scale and knowing when to switch pencils.
The Hard Pencils (H Scale)
H stands for "Hard". These pencils contain more clay and less graphite, making them perfect for light, precise lines that do not smudge easily. In my studio, 2H and H pencils are reserved for laying down initial proportion grids and foundational facial guidelines.
The Soft Pencils (B Scale)
B stands for "Blackness". These feature high graphite content and minimal clay binder. Moving up from 2B to 8B, the graphite becomes noticeably buttery, yielding velvety dark tones. In hyper-realistic portraiture, the stark tonal contrast between white tooth and deep 8B shadows is what breathes 3D life into flat paper.
